Vijayawada

Popularly known by its colonial name Bezawada, it is the second-largest city and commercial hub in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. "Vijayawada" literally translates to "the place of victory." The city is part of the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region and is located on the banks of the Krishna River surrounded by the hills of the Eastern Ghats, known as the Indrakeeladri Hills. The most important feature of Vijayawada is the river Krishna, which provides a steady water supply and has the Buckingham Canal on its southern side. Vijayawada holds a rich cultural past.

1.Undavalli Caves

It is a set of rock-cut temples located amidst lush greenery. It is a perfect blend of architectural marvel and historical significance. These caves, which are dedicated to Lord Padmanabha and Lord Narasimha, date back more than 1300 years and were carved out of a single sandstone base. The Krishna River flowing behind the caves offers boat rides on the river to enjoy the natural beauty.

2.Prakasam Barrage

It is an iconic bridge that links the districts of Krishna and Guntur. Standing on a whopping 160 pillars and offering an astounding view of the holy River Krishna. The bridge was built in the year 1957 and was named after Shri Tanguturi Prakasam. This bridge connects the KolkataChennai highway and facilitates the irrigation of over 1.2 acres of farmland.

3.Bhavani Island

Spread over 100 acres over the Krishna River, this is one of the largest river islands in India. This popular scenic spot is 5 km from the city centre and can be reached by boat from the banks of Krishna River. There are also numerous activities to pursue on the island- like water skiing, kayaking, parasailing, and laser shows. Additionally, the island is known for its parks and restaurants.

4.Victoria Jubilee Museum

It is also known as the Bapu Museum. This archaeological museum, which was established in 1887 and is currently run by the Department of Archeology, has many exhibits that chart centuries of history and culture, from intricately carved idols to painted artwork and weapons. One of the key highlights of the Bapu Museum is a pristine marble statue of Buddha. The sprawling, glistening white, marble statue was brought from Alluru.

5.Kondapalli Fort

Kondapalli Fort is a marvellous 14th-century fort located in the village of Kondapalli in Guntur district near Vijayawada. Kondapalli Fort is also called Kondapalli Kota and was built by the Musunuri Nayaks in the district. The village is known for the locally produced wooden toys called Kondapalli dolls. This is an architectural marvel with an entrance gate, called the Dargah Darwaja, that is carved out of a single boulder of granite and other features including a reservoir, Golconda Darwaza, Dargah of Gareeb Saheeb and Tanisha Mahal.

6.Gandhi Hill

Located at an elevation of about 550 feet from the ground. Gandhi Hill was the first to have a ginormous stupa dedicated to the father of our nation - Mahatma Gandhi. Around the stupa, you will find six shrines dedicated to Gandhiji, a fully stocked library and the city's only planetarium.

7.Kanaka Durga Temple

Perched on the Indrakeeladri Hill, Kanaka Durga Temple is the most revered Hindu temple in Vijayawada, with its history intertwined with the identity of the city. The temple also runs a food donation programme as a part of its many charitable activities.

8.Besant Road

The busiest trade centres of the city. It now houses some of the best modern eateries in the town. With multi-cuisine restaurants providing quality services, the foodies in the town love this road. Filled with exuberance and vibrance, with many numbers of cinema halls, (more than 50 we hear!). The best time to visit Besant Road is in the evening when the city comes alive.

9.Hazratbal Mosque

This mosque experiences a footfall of thousands of people, irrespective of caste and creed, to take one glance at Prophet Mohammad's relic that is put up on display once a year. Boasting beautiful architecture and located conveniently in the city, this white structure is one of the most picturesque stops in Vijayawada.

10.Rajiv Gandhi Park

Set on the banks of River Krishna. The riverside location of the park not only adds to its allure but also allows you to catch a good view of the Krishna River. If you prefer a quiet evening with your loved ones, you can wander around the gardens on neat paths flanked by flower beds. Some of the key attractions at the park include a mini train (perfect for your little ones), a musical fountain, and lifelike structures of prehistoric animals and dinosaurs.

11.Scrap Sculpture Park

Located at the end of MG Road, is a unique waterside theme-based park. The theme of the park is a very relevant and novel one – installations crafted using scrap metals. From animals made of old pipes and metal plates to representations of cars and motorbikes, there is a lot to keep visitors engaged and inspired. You can visit the park during the late afternoon hours and enjoy some good photography as the light plays with the different textures and tones of the installations.
